HOLLAND (WHTC) - Some high school students in Holland are stepping up to help save the historic DeZwaan windmill at Windmill Island Gardens. Two different committees of the Holland Youth Advisory Council have organized fundraisers to be held on the opening day of the 2013 season on the island April 20. First is a 5-kilometer run and 1-mile walk that’s been dubbed “Run of the Mill.” Then in the evening is a silent auction at the island’s celebration pavilion that’s been titled “Project Restoration: Keep the Mill Turning.” City officials say $721,000 is needed to fix DeZwaan, which has a large crack in a support beam that spans the windmill’s cap and is needed for its blades to turn. No money has been set aside in the city budget for those repairs.
