Michigan steps up to the challenge of helping the autistic

by

LANSING (WKZO) -- The State of Michigan’s Department of Communty Health is unveiling their plan to address the needs of the growing autistic population.

State lawmakers rejected requests that insurers be required to also cover Autism, and pick up the costs of its treatment for years, but that all changed when Lt. Gov. Brian Calley who has a child who is autistic, went to bat for the legislation.

State Health Spokesperson Angela Minicuci says now that they have the coverage, it is time to make sure services are available.

She says it coincides with the launch of a brand new website that will detail all the services offered for both the 16-thousand children and the 50- thousand adults who fall on the autism spectrum.

The information will be posted at www.michigan.gov/autism.
