SPRING LAKE, MI (WHTC) - You may have heard a public service announcement recently on 1450 WHTC about the dangers of distracted driving through cell phone use. However, that’s not the only cause of distraction for motorists, as was evident on a road between Spring Lake and Fruitport yesterday afternoon. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin, both 16-year-old Ryan Freed of Spring Lake and 65-year-old Mariann Puckett of Fruitport were guilty of taking their eyes off of Fruitport Road north of Hickory Street. Freed was southbound and looked down to find a dropped cell phone, while Puckett was busy eating in her northbound vehicle. Both vehicles drifted across the center line and slammed head-on at nearly full speed. Rescue crews had to extricate both drivers, and each was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries - Freed at North Ottawa Community Hospital in Grand Haven, and Puckett at Mercy-Hackley Hospital in Muskegon. The crash remains under investigation.
