KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Detroit City Council will appeal the Governor’s finding that the Motor City needs an Emergency Financial Manager today.

WMU Professor of Public Administration Robert Peters thinks it’s pretty obvious that they do need outside help. He says without some serious corrective action, Detroit would be in financial straights for a very long time.

Peters says Detroit’s city government is structured to govern a much larger city than the one that remains and it will take a lot more than just putting them on a budget to fix the city’s problems.

Work must also be done to develop jobs and a local economy to make the city viable long term.

If the city council loses their appeal, the Governor could announce his EFM soon after.

There may also be court challenges from community groups who will argue that they are being stripped of their lawfully elected government.
