LANSING (WKZO) -- The Michigan Senate has given the green light to spending just under 21-million dollars in taxpayer funds to dredge 49 bays and harbors. Twelve-million dollars will be pulled from the general fund, while the rest of the money will come out of Michigan's Waterways Trust Fund for the emergency work.
Lake Michigan and Lake Huron set records for low levels this winter, and they remain more than a foot lower than this time last year. That has resulted in several key shipping harbors being closed.
