GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - A 28-year-old Jenison man was found guilty on Friday by an Ottawa County Circuit Court Jury. Judge Jon Hulsing had given instructions to the panel of seven women and five men yesterday after two days of testimony in the first-degree child abuse trial of Ryan Kupres. Prosecutors claim that he caused brain and bone injuries to his then-five-month-old daughter Layla, ailments that were spotted when she was hospitalized nearly a year ago. Kupres already has a 2008 conviction on his record for a similar charge involving a son. Defense attorneys contended that Kupres had no idea what caused the girl’s injuries, and the defendant testified during this trial. The jury resumed deliberations this morning, and needed less than an hour to return the guilty verdict. The girl is now in the custody of her mother, who lives in Zeeland, and doctors say that Layla is expected to make a full recovery. Kupres was returned to custody in the Ottawa County Jail pending an April 15 sentencing.
