Report: Parts of Michigan face delayed economic recovery

LANSING (WKZO) -- A report from IHS Global Insight says parts of Michigan won't dig out from the global recession for many more years.

The study found Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor have been able to surpass the peak employment levels they saw before the recession, but Saginaw, Detroit, Benton Harbor, Monroe, Flint, and Jackson won't rebound until at least 2023.  Ann Arbor got back to its peak employment levels last fall and Grand Rapids hit the mark this year.

The Holland-Grand Haven area is expected to return sometime next year, and Battle Creek is expected to make a comeback in 2016, while the Kalamazoo-Portage area and Lansing are expected to return to peak levels in 2018.  The report was done for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
