LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has joined those who say items at the Detroit Institute of Arts cannot be sold to pay off the city of Detroit's massive debts.

In a statement, he says the DIA collection is "held by the City of Detroit in Charitable trust for the people of Michigan, and no piece in the collection may thus be sold, conveyed, or transferred to satisfy city debts or obligations."  The AG issued a 22-page opinion stating that selling DIA art would go against Michigan's charitable trust law.

Detroit faces a crippling 15-billion to 17-billion-dollar debt.
