GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) - Even Dr. Brian Long was surprised. The Director of Supply Management Research at Grand Valley State said that his monthly survey of purchasing managers in West Michigan indicates that all three factors of new orders, production and employment were strongly higher in May. The survey’s index of business improvement, called new orders, rose to +35, up from +31, a two-year high. The production index came in at +35, slightly higher than last month’s +34. The employment index rose to +28 from +22. Strong auto sales, along with improvements in office furniture sales, the housing market and new construction sparked Dr. Long’s strongest report in two years. However, Dr. Long admitted that these numbers run contrary to national trends, which are the weakest in four years.
