HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - Holland’s weekly Street Performer series last night downtown was marred by a police situation involving an apparently distraught 55-year-old Holland man. Public Safety officers had been notified by family members around 8:30 PM that the suspect had allegedly phoned threats to his ex-girlfriend in Wyoming, along with other former acquaintances, and were concerned for his safety. The man’s parked but empty vehicle was spotted behind the New Holland Brewery restaurant, and while officers were inspecting the car, the suspect came forward, brandishing a weapon, before starting to run in an effort to avoid capture. Officers claimed that he pointed the weapon at them during the chase, but no shots were fired before he was cornered. Following a 20-minute negotiation session, the suspect surrendered peacefully. Streets surrounding the restaurant were blocked off for about 45 minutes, and there were no injuries. The unnamed man was held in the Ottawa County Jail overnight and awaits arraignment on felonious assault charges.
