DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The first hearing in the city of Detroit bankruptcy case will take place today. Judge Steven Rhodes will be asked by lawyers for Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to shield the city and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder from lawsuits that are attempting to force a withdrawal of the bankruptcy petition.  Retired federal bankruptcy judge Ray Reynolds Graves says all parties should have full confidence that Rhodes will handle the case fairly.

The estimated $18-billion worth of long-term debts for Detroit makes it the largest Chapter 9 bankruptcy case in U.S. history.
