ROBINSON TWP., MI (WHTC) - An elderly couple visiting the Lakeshore from southern Pennsylvania was involved in a fatal crash at a Robinson Township intersection last night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Koster, 81-year-old Carl Beaver was driving his vehicle westbound on Osborn Street when, around 9 PM, he apparently drove through a stop sign at 104th Avenue as the southbound pickup truck of 52-year-old Gumesind Mancilla of West Olive was bearing down upon him at full speed. The truck broadsided the Beaver vehicle, causing it to flip over onto its top. Both Carl Beaver and his 78-year-old wife Betty were pinned and had to be extricated by Robinson Township Fire Rescuers. Betty Beaver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office; Carl Beaver and Mancilla were hospitalized – Beaver to Spectrum-Butterworth, Mancilla to North Ottawa Community – for treatment.
Koster added that all involved were buckled up as the crash remains under investigation.
