GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - What is now being described as a recovery rather than a rescue of a 47-year-old Walker man resumes at daybreak in about 45 feet of water in Lake Michigan, about three quarters of a mile west of Grand Haven. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Steve Kempker, disaster struck around 4 PM yesterday when John English wanted to take a dip off of a 37-foot pleasure craft returning from Muskegon into the choppy, 64-degree waters. He appeared to be floundering after diving in, and others on board tried several times to toss a life ring out to the struggling man without success before English was overcome. Efforts by county and US Coast Guard dive teams using side scan sonar failed to locate the man, and the search was called off at dusk around 9:45 PM.
