HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) - A two-vehicle crash on Holland’s North Side snarled outbound traffic during the morning commute for more than an hour. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant John Wolffis, 24-year-old Nicole Walters of Hamilton was driving her SUV eastbound on James Street around 7:25 AM, and as she was crossing US-31 on a green light, the southbound pickup truck of 49-year-old Michael VanDyke of Holland Township was apparently not slowing down. Witnesses told deputies that the truck drove through the red light and broadsided the SUV. The force of the collision sent the two vehicles into the northbound lanes, forcing authorities to narrow traffic through one lane for about an hour as a result.
Rescue crews had to extricate Walters, and she was taken to Holland Hospital in fair condition; a buckled-up VanDyke was not hurt. It was not immediately disclosed if dense fog and rain in the area at the time was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
