NILES(WKZO) -- They have released the name of the pilot of an ultra-light aircraft that crashed around 4:45 Saturday afternoon headed toJerryTylerMemorialAirportnearNiles.
Police say that 50-year-old Christopher McKenna from Elkhart was flying in tandem with another ultra-light, which was piloted by a longtime friend. Investigators say they had gone up briefly to test an antenna on one of the aircraft and they were headed back to land. The friend did not realize the other plane was not with him until after he was on the ground.
They had to set up search parties and spent hours looking for the missing aircraft, which was finally found ripped to pieces in a densely wooded area about 1.5 miles from the airport.
There are no early indications what may have brought the aircraft down.
The FAA has taken over the investigation.
