HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) - A noontime crash yesterday on Holland’s North Side snarled traffic, but didn’t result in any injuries. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brent Converse, 42-year-old Jeffery Holman of Grant was driving his semi south on US-31, while 28-year-old Jessica Smith of Zeeland wanted to turn right from Riley Street onto the highway on a green light. Holman said that the combination of the sun’s glare and snow that was still on the traffic signal kept him from determining if the light was green or of it was red, and he drove into the intersection at full speed. Both drivers were buckled up, and while Smith shrugged off any treatment for small cuts from broken glass caused by the collision, Holman wasn’t hurt. The highway was closed for a brief time while the scene was cleaned up and County Road Commission crews dusted off that signal and all others along the stretch of US-31 of any remaining snow.
Sergeant Converse says that this accident can teach a lesson to all motorists: Treat any signal as a four-way stop if conditions keep you from being certain of what color light is flashing.
