COOPERSVILLE, MI (WHTC) - A massive pileup occurred on I-96 in northeast Ottawa County yesterday. Sheriff’s Sergeant Steve Austin and fellow deputies shut down the highway for four hours while sorting through and organizing clean-up efforts in a three-mile stretch between Coopersville and Marne, beginning at around 9:30 AM. Snow-covered roads and near-whiteout conditions led to the mayhem that included jackknifed semis and up to 30 vehicles involved. Authorities say that motorists need to slow down and back off from following vehicles too closely. So far, there have been no reports of any serious injuries or deaths since the wintry weather conditions arrived along the Lakeshore on Sunday night.
