DOUGLAS, MI (WHTC) - A public meeting to talk about the future of the Saugatuck-Douglas harbor region is on Saturday morning at 10 AM at the Tower Marina facility in Douglas. Owner RJ Peterson, who has suggested filling the majority of Kalamazoo Lake with silt in order to create a deep enough channel for recreational and commercial boating to come from Lake Michigan to the area, has also planned to ask the state for a permit to dredge the Kalamazoo River between the big lake and his community. The Kalamazoo Lake Harbor Authority has petitioned the city councils of both Saugatuck and Douglas for emergency funding to immediately dredge the channel due to silt and low water levels.
