Flying Dutchmen, Both GVSU Teams Enjoy Home Cooking

Carissa Verkaik tallied 17 points as Calvin handed visiting Hope its first women's basketball loss of the season on Saturday night, 64-59. The Flying Dutch entertain St. Mary's at DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.


Grand Valley State's teams swept a basketball doubleheader from visiting Michigan Tech on Saturday. Breland Hogan's 16 points helped the men down the visiting Huskies, 70-65. The GVSU women were also victorious, 76-64, thanks in part to 30 points from Briauna Taylor. Both of the Lakers' teams are in Sault Ste. Marie to play Lake Superior State on Thursday evening.

In state major-college basketball on Saturday: Western Michigan fell to visiting Ohio, 61-59; Eastern Michigan lost at Bowling Green, 46-44; Detroit lost at Cleveland State, 74-62; and Oakland slipped at North Dakota State, 73-65.
