HOLLAND (WHTC) - The Macatawa Area Express transit system is asking Holland city planners to consider a change to a long-standing city ordinance that bans any sort of advertising or billboard. MAX wants to put in benches at about 25 of its bus stops around the city, but they need to find a way to pay for them. They’re proposing either selling ads, or having local schools, churches or community groups adopt a bench, where they’d cover the cost of the bench, its installation and maintenance. The city passed an ordinance in 1994 banning billboards and advertising around the city. That measure survived a court challenge from a billboard company that went all the way to the Michigan Supreme Court in 2001.
