HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - A man known for serving his country and his community will be laid to rest. Friends and colleagues came to the Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral home yesterday, paying their respects to the family of Bill Sikkel, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. A decorated World War Two veteran who remained a reservist for around 30 years after the conflict, Sikkel was a successful realtor before entering politics as Holland’s Mayor in 1983 for two two-year terms. He returned to the political arena seven years later, beginning a decade of service representing Holland and Fillmore Township on the Allegan County Board before stepping down in 2004. Sikkel remained active in the community until his death, and his funeral service is set for 11 AM today at Faith CRC in Holland, where he was an elder and deacon for many years. Flags at city facilities in Holland will be at half-staff through Wednesday in Sikkel's honor.
