Saugatuck Wins SAC Boys Crown; Hope at Calvin for Two MIAA Titles on Saturday

UNDATED (WHTC) - Looking at high school boys’ basketball along the Lakeshore on Friday night: Saugatuck won the SAC boys’ title by downing visiting Decatur, 72-62; Zeeland West downed visiting Holland, 61-41; Holland Christian upended visiting Byron Center, 55-51; West Ottawa was sunk at Rockford, 63-42; Zeeland East won at Kenowa Hills, 61-41; Hamilton needed overtime to outlast visiting Unity Christian, 66-60; Fennville handled visiting Lawrence, 80-66; Black River fell at West Michigan Lutheran, 62-50; and Calvary was a winner at Heritage Christian, 70-52. Hope College takes on Calvin College for two separate MIAA basketball tournament titles in Grand Rapids on Saturday. Hear both games from DeNoord Arena on 92.7 The Van and http://927thevan.com/listen-live, staring at 2:40 PM with the women’s contest, followed at 7:10 PM with the men’s match up.

Grand Valley State’s men and women are in Detroit’s Matthaei Building to take on host Wayne State on Saturday afternoon.

While Michigan and Michigan State take Saturday off, awaiting Sunday Big 10 action, the other five Division I schools in the state are participating in the “Bracket Buster” scheduling promotion. Afternoon action finds Western Michigan home to Pacific, Eastern Michigan entertaining Missouri State, and Detroit renewing old Missouri Valley Conference ties at Wichita State. Evening play finds Central Michigan at Youngstown State and Oakland home to Morehead State.

Brandon Saad’s goal 2:24 into the third period broke a 1-1 tie, as the Blackhawks held off visiting San Jose on Friday night, 2-1. Chicago is home to Columbus at the United Center on Sunday evening.

NBA play on Friday night saw the Pistons lose at Indiana, 114-82, as David West had 18 points for the Pacers, and the Bulls win at Charlotte, 103-73, thanks in part to 17 points from Taj Gibson. Detroit has a rematch with Indiana at the Palace on Saturday evening, while Chicago visits Oklahoma City on Sunday night.

Jimmy Hayes scored twice as Rockford beat the visiting Griffins on Friday night, 4-3. Grand Rapids is home to San Antonio at Van Andel Arena on Saturday evening.
