Maserati will not be made in Detroit

AUBURN HILLS (WKZO) -- Plans for Fiat to build the Maserati in Detroit won't happen.

The Maserati Levante, which shares common architecture with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, was supposed to have been built at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant beginning later this year.  Instead, the luxury sport utility vehicle will be built at a factory near Fiat's headquarters in Turin, Italy.

According to a spokesperson for the automaker, the reason the decision was made is because the full production capacity of the Jefferson North plant will be needed to produce the Grand Cherokee and Durango.  The success of the Grand Cherokee has exceeded Chrysler's expectations and demands for the vehicle are high.
