SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC) - The Saugatuck Board of Education is scheduled to hold its monthly meeting this evening, but the subject of the athletic department’s nickname of “Indians” is not expected to be on the agenda. The Lakeshore district is one of 35 statewide named in a complaint filed by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to the US Department of Education, asking that federal funding be suspended until these districts change their teams’ nicknames, mascots and symbols that the DCR claims are offensive to Native Americans. Saugatuck’s board has been told by district attorneys to take no action on this matter until a decision is made on the complaint.
