DETROIT (WKZO) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has announced the closure of 50 parks in the city due to the financial crisis and the lack of an agreement to lease Belle Isle to the State of Michigan.  The mayor says there will be no money to properly maintain the parks.

The Belle Isle proposal, dismissed by the City Council this week, had the city retaining ownership of the property and saving the city millions of dollars.  However, it would become a state park under the supervision of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The 30-year-plan would have motorists pay a ten-dollar annual fee to use the park.  Renovations and maintenance would have been provided by the state.
