UNDATED (WHTC) -- The American Red Cross of West Michigan has offered assistance in 749 disasters nationwide in 2013. Many of the disasters were due to home fires but the disasters closest to home here in West Michigan include the flooding in April and the ice storm just last week. After the flooding, Red Cross volunteers opened six shelters in four counties. More than 67-hundred items were distributed to those affected by flooding. After the ice storm, three shelters were opened to accommodate those that had lost power. In 2013, American Red Cross volunteers helped 1.3 million people around the world due to natural disasters.
