MT. PLEASANT, MI (WHTC) - Family members and friends will remember Kelly Markatos for her personality and friendliness, but the results of a medical examination may have revealed something that few had known before her death.
Roommates of the 22-year-old Central Michigan University student from Holland couldn’t rouse her from her bed at their off-campus apartment in Mt. Pleasant on September 3rd, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Isabella County Medical Examiner’s Office. At the time, investigators didn’t believe that Markatos was the victim of foul play, but an initial autopsy into a cause of death was inconclusive.
Further examination by forensic experts at Spectrum Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids revealed that she probably died from symptoms of bulimia, an eating disorder. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department now considers the case closed.
CMU officials said yesterday that their counseling center does offer services for those afflicted with this and other ailments, but didn’t say whether Markatos had been in contact with school counselors about her condition before her death.
