I-96 Crossing Ottawa County into Kent County Named for Fallen Officer

LANSING, MI (WHTC) - Years from now, many motorists driving the main freeway from Grand Rapids to Muskegon may only see a sign near the Ottawa County line and go on, but for those who knew a Walker policeman killed in the line of duty, that sign will mean so much more.

Efforts by state House Representative Robert VerHeulen culminated with yesterday’s signing by Governor Snyder of a resolution designating a stretch of I-96, from Fruitridge Avenue in Walker to 16th Avenue in Marne, as “Officer Trevor Slot Memorial Highway.” About two years ago, the nine-year veteran was assisting fellow officers in the chase of two men who allegedly robbed a bank in Ravenna by placing stop sticks on the 8th Avenue exit when the vehicle the suspects were driving ran him over. The suspects were killed in a shootout shortly thereafter.

VerHeulen made this designation one of his first missions when elected last year, for he was Walker’s mayor during the time that Officer Slot was killed.
