Pistons top Bulls, Red Wings and Blackhawks Lose, GVSU Women's Soccer Claims Third National Championship

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The Detroit Lions take on the red hot Eagles in Philadelphia this afternoon.  The two teams records are the same at 7-5 but the Eagles have won their last five in a row.  The Lions are coming off an impressive 40-10 win over the Packers on Thanksgiving Day.  Game coverage on 1450 WHTC begins at noon.  Later on in the evening, Sunday Night Football sees a first place clash in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers headed to New Orleans to face the Saints.  Catch the game on 1450 WHTC beginning at 7:30 P.M. 

The Chicago Bears will play Monday night without quarterback Jay Cutler.  He was ruled out for the game against the Dallas Cowboys.  Chicago comes in at 6-and-6 while the Cowboys are 7-and-5.  Game coverage of the game begins at 8 P.M. on 1450 WHTC.


The playoff hopes of a local college are still alive.  The GVSU Lakers are back in the NCAA Division II Football Playoff Semifinals after getting a 35-28 victory over West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at Lubbers Stadium. The Lakers will face Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, December 14th.  The time and place and which school will be the host remains to be determined. 

Michigan State's No. 1 defense bent, but did not break, beating unbeaten Ohio State Saturday night, 34-24.  The beginning of the game was all Michigan, with the Spartans scoring the first 10 points of the game.  Quarterback Connor Cook passed for 304 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night and the No. 10 Spartans scored 14 straight points to beat the No. 2 Buckeyes 34-24 in the Big Ten Championship Game.  The Spartans will play Stanford, which defeated Arizona State on Saturday for the Pac-12 championship.  Michigan State will play in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day for the first time since 1988.

******************************************************************************************************************************The Red Wings were edged out by the Florida Panthers, 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night.  Danny Cleary registered Detroit's lone marker, opening the scoring 4:06 into the game.  Jonas Gustavsson allowed the Panthers two goals on 37 shots.  They’ll head to Florida to take on the Panthers on Tuesday. 

The Blackhawks were outscored in the shootout by the Anahem Ducks, losing the game, 3-2 on Friday night. The Blackhawks are winless in three straight for the first time this season.  They will try to find find their way back to the win column this evening, taking on the Florida Panthers tonight.

******************************************************************************************************************************The Pistons were at Chicago’s United Center to meet the Bulls and beat them, winning 92-75.  The point scoring was pretty well spread out for the Pistons with Kyle Singler getting 12 points, Josh Harrellson added 10, Josh  Smith had  seven points and 10 rebounds, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond scored eight  points apiece and pulled down 12 and 14 rebounds, respectively, for the Pistons.  They head to Atlanta for a game against the Hawks on Wednesday.  Taj Gibson scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Mike Dunleavy had 16 points and Carlos Boozer added 13 points and seven rebounds for Chicago, which has lost three of its last four.  The Bulls face the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night at the United Center.


The Flying Dutch women’s basketball team of Hope College set a scoring record at their home season debut, scoring 107 points at DeVos Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon, topping Alma, 107-61.  Hope improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) race heading into semester exam week.  The Flying Dutch take a week off for semester exams before hosting their own Post-Exam Jam at DeVos Fieldhouse next Friday and Saturday.

Hope College’s Flying Dutchmen beat Carthage, 80-58 on Saturday in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association/College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin Challenge.  Hope is now 10-10 all-time in the history of the MIAA/CCIW Challenge. 

Grand Valley State was able to hold off a late run from Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7) in Allendale, as the Lakers notched an 84-80 victory to stay unbeaten. The game was tied 80-80 with 13 seconds to play before sophomore guard Darren Kapustka drained four free throws to clinch the win.  With the victory, GVSU is 5-0 on the year and 2-0 in GLIAC play.


Grand Valley's women’s soccer team claimed its third NCAA Division II title on Saturday, beating West Florida, 3-0, in Evans Park, Georgia.  The team also remains unbeaten for the 2013 season, with a 24-0-1 record.
