Desperate Measures Sends Man to Prison

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) -- A 44-year-old man took desperate measures for a desperate situation when he robbed a Grand Rapids Chase Bank back in July.  Blaise James Balczak had no previous criminal experience which probably lent to the fact that he was caught quickly.  Balczak was in Kent County District Court on Wednesday for sentencing and U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell sentenced him to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.  Mlive reported that the Balczak was in foreclosure on his home and had lost his job when he decided to rob the bank.  His attorney, Sean Tilton, said Balczak acted after he believed his request for a mortgage modification had been turned down, “Unfortunately, on the same day that Mr. Balczak made this decision, Bank of America approved his loan modification.”
