Michigan Senate committee approves changes to landline telephones

LANSING (WKZO) -- Telephone companies like AT&T are looking to phase out decades-old copper landlines in Michigan in a few years, and a state Senate committee approves.  A panel approved legislation Tuesday that will allow phone companies to discontinue the service to homes so long as some type of newer phone service is offered, such as voice-over IP.

The AARP has argued against the proposal, contending it will harm seniors and small businesses who are still using fax machines and phone lines for credit card transactions.  A spokesperson for AT&T maintains that some communities have already seen the change and many customers have not noticed any difference in their service.
