Tigers Win, Cubs, White Sox and Whitecaps Lose, Michigan State Tops West Michigan

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The Tigers extended their lead over the Indians beating them 7-2 in a rain-shortened affair from Comerica Park.  The contest was called after seven innings of action.  Victor Martinez went 2-for-3 and knocked in two.   Andy Dirks had two hits and scored twice for Detroit, which has won two straight following a three-game skid.  Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera was pulled after two innings because of irritation in his abdominal area.  The Tigers meet the Indians again this evening.  Catch all the action on 1450 WHTC at 6:40 P.M.

NL Player of the Week Jeff Samardzija tossed 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts in a losing battle for the Cubs, 6-5.  The Cubs struck first and were winning 5-0 when the Phillies started their comeback in the sixth inning.  The Cubs have dropped 17 of their last 20 at Wrigley Field.  The Cubs host the Phillies for Game 2 this afternoon.

David Ortiz knocked in two runs and walked twice as the Red Sox sank the White Sox 4-3 at Fenway Park.  Hector Santiago slipped to 4-and-8 after allowing four runs in under four frames.  Avisail Garcia went 2-for-4 driving in one run and scoring two for Chicago, which saw its two-game win streak end.  The White Sox take on Boston this evening.

On Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home portion of the 2013 season and the West Michigan Whitecaps’ season-long seven-game winning streak both came to an end with a 5-1 loss against the Fort Wayne Tin Caps.  West Michigan (35-31, 68-68) suffered their first loss since August 22 while finishing just short of a perfect seven-game home stand.  Total attendance at Fifth Third Ballpark climbed to 377,948 for the year – the largest single-season attendance total since 2004.

Kurtis Drummond collected an impressive one-handed interception and also scored one of two touchdowns by the Michigan State defense as the Spartans earned a 26-13  win over the Western Michigan Broncos at Spartan Stadium.  Though the offense struggled, the Spartans were strong on defense allowing just 204 total yards while forcing four turnovers.
