State health officials say swine flu case should not cause worries for others

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - It sounds like a nightmare scenario. A child from southwest Michigan has come down with a case of swine flu and there is with no vaccine available. However, the word from health officials is not to worry. Michigan Department of Community Health spokesperson Angela Minicuci says by the time this variant of the swine flu had been identified as the first case of its type this year in Michigan, the victim from Berrien County had already recovered. They believe the child contracted it at a county fair while displaying pigs and they are warning others who may be headed to fairs this fall. Health officials suggest using soap and water to wash hands, sneeze into your elbow and stay home if you get sick to avoid spreading it around.

Minicuci says this strain of the flu is not covered by this year’s flu shots.
