COVERT, MI (WHTC) - A new report claims that Van Buren County’s cancer death rate by Caucasians was 12.5 percent higher than the rest of the state, from 2003 to 2010, and that it was directly attributed to the Palisades nuclear power plant. The study by the Radiation and Public Health Project was commissioned by the anti-nuclear activist group Beyond Nuclear, but did not go into death rates of minority groups, nor did it account for other factors. Plant officials say that their facility continues to operate safely, and district health officials dispute the report’s conclusions about the cause and effect. The NRC will further investigate the findings.
