WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC) - Drunken driving is the target of the upcoming Labor Day traffic enforcement initiative along the Lakeshore and across the state. A mobile billboard featuring a custom police cruiser with a taxi cap wrap on half of the patrol car has a special message for drunk drivers: “Choose Your Ride.” It was displayed outside of the Ottawa County Administration Building in the Fillmore Street Complex this morning as law enforcement officers from 155 local police departments, sheriff offices and the Michigan State Police posts will conduct drunken driving patrols and seatbelt enforcement surveillance. Federal funding for the extra shifts is being funneled through the state Office of Highway Safety Planning. Authorities hope to cut down on the eight fatalities recorded during last Labor Day weekend in Michigan, four of which were considered alcohol-related.
