University of Michigan study finds near death experiences are not imaginary

ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- A new study supports the idea that near-death experiences are a real phenomenon.

Researchers at the University of Michigan say the brain continues to be conscious after the heart stops beating.  Nearly 20-percent of people who have survived cardiac arrest report having internal visions and heightened perception.

The team studied nine rats and found continued brain activity after the heart and blood flow stopped.  The study's lead author says the findings will be the foundation for future human studies probing mental experiences occurring in the dying brain.

The research is published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Science."
