UNDATED (WHTC) - Two beaches along the Lake Michigan shore south of Holland are currently off-limits for swimming. Elevated bacterial levels were indicated by health department testing at both Pier Cove Beach south of Saugatuck-Douglas and at South Haven’s South Beach. It’s the second time in as many months that Pier Cove’s waters had E. coli counts more than seven times the highest allowable state safe standard, while the same levels have been at South Beach for more than a week. No-body contact advisories are in place to prevent bathers from contracting illnesses from the polluted waters. It is beleved that soil runoff from recent heavy rains led to the tainted waters. More testing are planned tomorrow at both sites.
