Tourism continues to grow in Michigan

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The numbers are in, and the state says that this year's tourism season in Michigan has been another strong one. Early figures show that the Fourth of July last month saw an over 70 percent increase in out of state visitors staying in Michigan hotels, and State Senator John Proos says that it's partly because of the Pure Michigan tourism advertising campaign. He thinks it's well worthwhile to continue supporting, noting that for every dollar that taxpayers put out there to tell the great news about the Wolverine State, we see $5.76 come back to the state. Over 1.1 billion dollars, for example, was spent by tourists in 2011 and that equated to 79-million dollars in taxes that goes toward Michigan school districts, local municipalities and their police and fire departments.

Proos recently said, though, that he thinks that managers of the Pure Michigan campaign ought to try a little harder to contract with Michigan companies only when producing travel brochures. That's after it was revealed that an Iowa company has been assembling the brochures for this year.
