HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - The rules of the road are for everyone, and a 70-year-old Holland man apparently paid for not following them with his life. According to Holland Public Safety Captain Robert Buursma, Gene Mitchell was pedaling his bike westbound on 16th Street around 9:30 last night when he attempted to cross US-31 on a red light. His bike was struck by a vehicle going through that intersection on a green light at full speed, and Mitchell died at the scene. The vehicle’s driver, 48-year-old Pierre Hulsebus of Grandville, was not hurt. Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. The intersection had the most accidents in Holland last year, according to Public Safety Department records.
