GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - A 73-year-old former deacon at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grand Haven was sentenced yesterday. Joseph Finnigan will serve a year in jail, followed by four years of probation, after he pleaded guilty last month to two counts of larceny of more than 20 thousand dollars in a deal with prosecutors that had an embezzlement charge against him dropped. In addition, Ottawa County Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing ordered Finnigan to repay the church the 120 thousand dollars that was taken over a five-year period through last November, along with court fees and costs. Finnigan had worked at the church for 11 years before his crime was detected. The Grand Rapids Diocese and the parish are not commenting further on the case.
