HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - It’s not known why a 52-year-old Holland man would want to lie down next to railroad tracks with the Amtrak Pere Marquette passenger train bearing down on him. According to Holland Public Safety Captain Jack Dykstra, Rickey Pickett was struck by the train’s engine near the crossing on Lincoln Avenue at 17th Street just after 9 PM last night. The engineer told officers that the emergency brake had been applied when Pickett was spotted, but the train couldn’t stop in time to avoid striking the victim. Pickett was initially taken to Holland Hospital before being flown to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, where he died from his injuries during the overnight hours. No passengers or train staffers were injured. Dykstra added that, although alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, investigators will await results from an autopsy and toxicology tests before coming to any conclusions.
