GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - Two crashes less than a mile apart and about 18 hours apart along the same stretch of Mercury Drive southeast of Grand Haven on Saturday killed one man, hospitalized a couple, and could lead to charges in one of the incidents.
The first occurred before dawn, as Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Kevin Allman said that Spencer McGregor’s Jeep lost control near Ammeraal Avenue. It skidded off of the roadway, flipped over and struck a tree. The 18-year-old Grand Haven Township man died at the scene.
Around 10 PM, Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Koster and fellow deputies were called to Mercury Drive near Bignall Drive when a pickup truck almost became a pickup boat. That vehicle also lost control, struck one guardrail before crashing through another, and ended up in a marshy area near the Grand River. The male driver and a female passenger, described only as being 43 years old each and residents of Grand Haven Township, were taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital for treatment. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in this crash, and results of the investigation will be forwarded to the county Prosecutor’s Office for possible legal action
