Consider safety before trick-or-treating

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Parents will soon be suiting up their trick-or-treaters in costumes and heading out for the annual Halloween candy-collecting tradition.

But, will they be safe?

Deb Carpenter with Safe Kids Worldwide tells WKZO there is good reason to ask that question.

"Twice as many children are killed on Halloween than any other time of year, due to those safety risks," she said.

One of those risks has to do with how well children fit into their costumes.

"You don't want their sleeves to be all loose and hanging so that if there is a jack-o-lantern with a candle in it on a porch or driveway, their costume could catch on fire," Carpenter said.

Other tips include using reflective tape on their candy bags, only walk on sidewalks and paths, and avoid carrying sticks or other sharp objects.
