Michigan leads nation in fungal meningitis cases

HOWELL (WKZO) -- There are now more fungal meningitis cases related to tainted steroid injections in Michigan than any other state.

A Howell man whose wife recently died of meningitis has been diagnosed with the same illness.  65-year-old George Cary began showing signs of the illness just days after being told that initial tests showed no evidence of fungal meningitis.

Cary's wife Lilian died September 30th after receiving a tainted steroid for back and neck pain at a Brighton area clinic.  Cary also received a shot.

The tainted steroids have been linked to a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis that has sickened hundreds people and killed 24.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Michigan alone now has 73 cases, surpassing the 70 in Tennessee.

To date, five Michigan residents have died from the illness.
