Stabenow: Manufacturing makes the difference for Michigan

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Senator Debbie Stabenow tells WKZO her re-election effort is focused on areas where she can influence manufacturing development in the state.

"I don't believe we have an economy in Michigan unless we make things and grow things," Stabenow said. "That's the only way you have a middle class. That's where I focus."

Stabenow said she was surprised about criticism from challenger Pete Hoekstra during his WKZO appearance this week in which the former U.S. Representative said her support of tax breaks for battery companies in Michigan was a mistake.

"Both Pete and I have written multiple letters in support of companies in advanced batteries," she said.

Stabenow said the industry is likely to explode once battery technology is more prominent across the board.

"We're in a global race to see who's going to be owning this new industry - advanced batteries and other clean energy technology," she said. "China is spending $150 million a day to beat us."
