MATTAWAN, MI (WHTC) - A single-vehicle crash south of the Lakeshore late on Saturday night hospitalized a 33-year-old Otsego man, but his troubles may be just beginning. Van Buren County Sheriff’s Deputies say that the unnamed man was spotted by an off-duty Decatur Police Officer knocking down a mailbox with his vehicle. While the lawman was phoning authorities and following him with his own vehicle, the Otsego man drove through a stop sign on 25th Street and Red Arrow Highway near Mattawan and into a front yard, where his vehicle struck a tree stump and flipped over once onto its tires. The driver had to be extricated and was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. Investigators believe that his blood alcohol count may have exceeded the .16 “super drunk” threshold, and plan to request subsequent charges when they send the case to the county prosecutor’s office for review.
