WAYLAND, MI (WHTC) - A two-vehicle crash on Thursday morning northeast of Wayland killed a Middleville man.
Allegan County Sheriff's Deputies say that, shortly after 7 AM, a northbound pickup truck on Kalamazoo Street slowed for a stop sign at 142nd Avenue but didn't come to a complete stop. That vehicle drove into the path of a eastbound semi, which broadsided the pickup on the driver's side, causing it to careen into a nearby field.
The pickup driver, identified as 57-year-old Kenneth Earl Near, wasn't buckled up, and was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. The semi driver, 56-year-old Chris Bromley from Wayland, was not hurt. Deputies added that, although the roads were wet due to overnight rains, road conditions were apparently not a factor as the crash remains under investigation.
