VIDEO: West Coast Chamber announces Doug Hekman of Quincy Street, Inc. is Small Business Person

HOLLAND (WHTC) -- Tuesday, October 9, 2012: The Michigan West Coast Chamber recognized Doug Hekman of Quincy Street, Inc. as the 2012 Small Business Person of the Year.  The award was presented during the October 9 Early Bird Breakfast at Hope College's Haworth Inn & Conference Center.

Each year nominations are solicited for this prestigious award for companies that meet the following criteria:

*         Are a West Coast Chamber member

*         Have been in business for at least five years

*         Exemplify the best of small business in our community

Nominees are judged on the basis of their record of success in their field of endeavor and efforts to provide employment in the area.

A manufacturer of pork products, Quincy Street, Inc. began in 1994 and like many startups had early difficulties.  Doug Hekman, who at the time had 15 years in the pork business, joined the business in 1996 to see if the operation could be saved.  In 1998, Doug became a significant owner.  He started with almost no sales and a 15,000 square foot building.  Today, after six expansions, Quincy Street, Inc. has a team of 175 members and continues to grow.

Quincy Street, Inc. has experienced double digit growth each year for more than five years.  They had their first profitable year in 1998 and have not had a loss year since that time.  They just closed the financial year 2012 with a 20% growth in sales and 30% growth in profit compared to the prior year.  Quincy Street, Inc. started with 25 employees and is now at 175 teammates.  They have added over 20 teammates in the last two years.

"Quincy Street, Inc. is a hidden jewel of the community," said Jane Clark, President of the West Coast Chamber.   "In addition to being a growing job provider, they also financially support their community.   They have a named fund at the Holland/Zeeland Community Foundation, and match employee contributions to non-profits.  All in all, they give back 10% of their pre-tax profits.  We are fortunate to have Quincy Street Incorporated as an active member of the West Coast Chamber."
