HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) - Firefighters from Holland Township and Zeeland responded to a noontime blaze on Wednesday at a building on a North Side apartment complex.
Red Cross officials say at 20 persons from 12 families may be displaced by the fire in the north side of Clearview Apartments off of Riley Street and 120th Avenue. Residents were safely able to evacuate the 48-unit building as the first alarms were reported around 12:30 PM. Witnesses say that the blaze may have started from a resident cooking on a upper floor balcony or patio; several Lakeshore communities, including Jenison, have ordinances forbidding any charcoal or gas-fired grills in those situations, although it was not immediately known if Holland Township has such a law on its books.
There were no reports of any injuries to residents or firefighters as crews were able to bring the flames under control about 90 minutes after their arrival. A cause of the blaze, along with an initial estimate of the dollar amount of damage, wasn't immediately made by investigators.
