ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) - The Zeeland Board of Education decided unanimously on Thursday to hire Calvin DeKuiper as the district’s new superintendent. The 7-0 vote came following a final interview at Zeeland West High’s cafeteria. District officials spent Tuesday touring Ludington’s schools, where DeKuiper has been their chief for the past eight years. He was in Zeeland two weeks ago for three days of public meetings.
Zeeland officials will be working with their counterparts in Ludington during the next six weeks on what they hope will be a smooth transition period, with DeKuiper slated to begin his new duties shortly after the start of the New Year. Gary Feenstra, who came out of retirement in July to be the interim superintendent following the resignation of Dr. Dave Barry, will remain on staff as part of the transition process during the first few months of DeKuiper's tenure.
While most of the education attention in Zeeland was directed towards this final board interview with DeKuiper, Zeeland Christian Schools will hold a public meeting tonight to go over plans for expanding its current Central Avenue elementary school campus. It would involve up to 20 additional classrooms for sixth through eighth grade, along with a large, multi-purpose room.
